Robert Nesta Marley left the world a double legacy of romping music with a blistering message and a social activism in the name of love. Almost single-handedly he brought reggae – a musical form once unique to his home country of Jamaica - to the attention of a delighted world. Once he had our ear, he used his stardom to advocate his vision of peace, human rights, self determination, and interracial harmony. Marley conveyed this message through innovative, nearly hypnotic music and a stage presence that was both jubilant and absolutely serious.

For all the philosophical weight his lyrics could bear, Marley’s punchy, compelling tunes always brought a crowd to its feet and got it dancing in the space of a few bars. Along with peace and justice, his major cause was joy.
